The making of “The Black Star Surfers” Documentary
One of the major activities these days at the Black Star Surf Shop is the making of a documentary “The Black Star Surfers”. The documentary is about how learning to surf can be empowering as it can provide a means of making a living. Meanwhile, the surfers more intimate relationship with, and understanding of, their environment and ocean also creates local environmentalism and community activism. This story is about a group of young Ghanaians who are some of the first in their country to surf and how they experience personal growth through a process of economic, environmental, and community empowerment. The film “stars” our very own Frankee, co-owner of Black Star.
This is going to be a be a two or three year project, depending on how fast we can get all the footage we need and have it edited. Digital House, a video production studio located in Takoradi, the nearest city from Busua, has taken on the job of filming the documentary. We believe that with their good work, and with some luck getting the documentary shown at film festivals, we can showcase their talents on an international stage.
