Francis Abby - African Drum Instructor
Black Star Surf is teaming up with long time African drumming instructor, Francis Abby, to bring African drum lessons to Busua. You can’t always be surfing the awesome waves of Busua, so this is an opportunity to take some time to experience traditional African culture and learn to drum!
~ Jon Khoo USA, June 2010
The classes are for beginners to advanced drummers and feature the option to learn a variety of traditional African and Ghanaian drums. The Djembe (pronounced “jembay”) is the most popular African drum and probably the easiest to learn to play. There are other traditional drums that you can learn including the Djun Djun (pronounced “doon, doon”), an African base drum, or the Kpanlogo (pronounced “palogo”), which is a traditional Ghanaian drum. The Kpanlogo is harder to play than the Djembe but produces a wider range of beautiful beats and is an ideal choice for someone who already has some African drumming experience.
Drum lessons will be offered as part of our surf camp and surf tour packages or can be obtained separately for the surfer visiting Busua or for the non-surfer. There is a 10 Euro discount if you take the African Drum Class as part of one of our surf camp or surf tour packages.
Drum classes are two hours per day and it will be expected that you will spend some time each day practicing on your own.

Prices:
| 1 week drum classes: | |
| 6 lessons/12 hours of instruction | €100 Euros |
| 1 Djembe w/cover or Kpanlogo** | €50 Euros |
| €150 Euros |
**It is highly recommended that you purchase a drum while in Ghana so that you get the feel for your own drum while learning. Francis can provide you with a very good hand selected Djembe or Kpanlogo drum for 50 Euros. The Djembe comes with a nice traveling bag to keep your drum well protected. This is a much better price than you will be able to bargain for yourself and could not be found in Europe or elsewhere for less than 100 Euros. This means you can take the drum home with you and continue to feel the rhythms of Africa!
